5 Hidden Gems at Walt Disney World

When it comes to Walt Disney World attractions there are some names everyone knows. Most family Disney visits include at least one ride on Space Mountain, it’s a small world, or Slinky Dog Dash. While the crowds are headed to these popular attractions, this week we are sharing five less known activities your family is sure to enjoy. Check out our favorite hidden gem from each of the four parks plus a bonus (free) activity to experience on your next Walt Disney World vacation.

Hidden Gem 1: Tom Sawyer’s Island in Magic Kingdom

This first hidden gem is tucked away in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland. Most people walk past this area with not much more than a glance, however, this area has plenty of fun for your little ones. The island is themed after the literary work of Mark Twain and is only accessible by “raft.” Once on the island, your self-guided adventure will include creaky suspension bridges, navigating secret mined caves, and you will even uncover a frontier fort. Tom Sawyer’s Island is typically not very crowded and is a great laid-back area to allow the children to run around and explore without the worry of them getting lost in the crowd.

Hidden Gem 2: SeaBase at EPCOT

Located inside The Seas with Nemo & Friends, SeaBase might not have been on your radar to visit but it should be part of every family’s plans. As you exit The Seas with Nemo & Friends attraction you will find yourself in the middle of one of the largest man-made ocean environments on the planet. This area is home to over 4,000 sea creatures including spot sea turtles, angelfish, dolphins, rays, sharks, and more. Daily fish feedings take place at 10:00am and 3:30pm. In the warm Florida months not only will your family enjoy seeing all the aquatic animals you will also enjoy the plentiful air conditioning! BONUS: Another Hidden Gem is located on the bottom floor of this exhibit – Turtle Talk with Crush. This interactive show is on a temporary pause but be sure to check it out once it is back in operation. The whole family will be laughing at this wise-cracking turtle.

Hidden Gem 3: Rafiki’s Planet Watch at Animal Kingdom

Rafiki’s Planet Watch is tucked away in Animal Kingdom’s Africa area and is packed full of family fun. The area is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of animals and is only accessible by the Wildlife Express. Hop on this seven-minute train ride to get a behind-the-scenes look at the park’s animals. Once back in this area there are several things for your family to enjoy including Conservation Station that provides an up-close look at the veterinary care of animals at the park. Have little ones that would like a more “up-close” look at animals? Head over to Affection Station, Walt Disney World’s only petting zoo, and meet a variety of unique and domesticated animals. Another family favorite activity at Rafiki’s Planet Watch is The Animation Experience. Future Disney animators will love this hands-on activity where a talented Disney animator gives step-by-step instructions on how to illustrate a popular Disney character.

Hidden Gem 4: Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy at Hollywood Studios

This show is truly a “hidden” gem. If you don’t know where to find this little show, you truly will miss it. Located on Sunset Boulevard directly behind Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, this cute show is a must-see for Cars fans. Lightning McQueen is center stage inside the theater as he demonstrates what he’s learned over the years by using his brand-new, state-of-the-art racing simulator and its wraparound screen. Of course, the show wouldn’t be complete without appearances onscreen from Tow Mater, Cruz Ramirez, and the gang from Radiator Springs. This is another great opportunity to cool off while you enjoy the show.

Hidden Gem 5: Miniature Golf (included in your package)

For the last hidden gem, we are stepping outside the parks and sharing one of the benefits of booking a vacation package. Included in each package booking (resort + tickets) are four rounds of golf to one of Walt Disney World’s miniature golf courses. Families can choose between Fantasia Gardens and Winter Summerland (currently closed). Be sure to pick up your Magical Extras card at your resort’s front desk area before heading off to take advantage of this package offering.
